How To Handle Office Gossip

  • REJECT – There’s always a good way of saying bad things. You could always say no as the gossip comes to you. Not because you’re trying to be the big person or play hero here but because you’re just not comfortable talking about other people’s businesses. You can always show disinterest in a very polite manner.
  • MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS – Always set your mind that you are not interested on other people’s businesses. Have that mindset that you went to work for work and not for other things. As the saying goes, “train your mind to see good in everything.” It’s very important that you keep yourself at peace and not bugged by the toxins of the office. Gossips will only make you think  that you are greater than the others. So better keep yourself low-key and just do what you need to do. And gossiping is surely not one of it.
  • LEARN THE ART OF DEDMA – You can always ignore. Remember, gossip ends at the ear of a wise man. When you hear it, you can just smile at and forget about it. Just like what they always say, “Pasok sa isang tenga, labas sa kabila.”  You don’t have to spread it or even understand it. Just entertain it, don’t include your feelings and show that you’re interested. Brush it off so you won’t think negatively against other people. It will only stress you. After all, it’s not very nice to entertain hearsay. Don’t let these gossips consume you. They won’t do any good in your mental health. What other think of others do not really matter unless you let it.
  • HEADPHONES ON, VOLUMES UP! – When you know it’s coming, you can instantly put your earphones on and listen to the music that will overpower the buzz of the bees around. Don’t do it upfront, be discrete on doing it so that you won’t look rude. By doing this, you’re veering yourself away from the toxins of your workplace.   • DON’T BELIEVE IT UNLESS PROVEN – You can always listen but it’s always up to you if you want to believe it. But as the saying goes, to see is to believe. So whatever it is, let your eyes see them first before you believe it. Again, don’t let it consume you. And when your eyes get to see them, you can now go back to number 1.
