How to work well with your co-workers?

October 18, 2018

  • Undeniably, most of your time is consumed at work. Whether you are home-based, freelance, or you are your own boss you are still spending a lot of time with your craft. And if your job needs other people for it to produce an output, you are required to work well with them and have an harmonious relationship. Remember, you don’t really have to be friends with people you work with. But you have to build a good connection for you to be efficient with your jobs and produce a good output. You can’t continuously just do your work and not consider the people around you. No man is an island, right?

So, how do you work well with your co-workers? Here are the little things you have to remember.

    RESPECT

Out of all the things that you can give to your co-workers, respect is one of the musts. This is more than being polite and using the proper language. It also means respect of their time, personal space, and opinion. Respect is a vital character that a team needs. It’s through respect that people meet halfway and produce excellent outputs.

    STOP GOSSIPING

Sometimes talking about other people can’t be avoided. However, when it’s already destructive to growth and relationships that’s the time that it becomes gossip. Gossiping can uplift the ego of the gossiper but it can’t really bring growth and good relationships. Remember, gossip ends at the ears of the wise. Don’t fuel drama and emotional commotions in your workplace. It doesn’t help when we are emotional at work.

GIVE COMPLIMENTS TO WHOM IT IS DUE

A little “good job”, “I appreciate it”, “thank you”, with coffee on the side (if possible) can be a lot. Not only when it’s a job well done but also for the efforts given. Compliments are proof that one is doing his/her job well in the company because someone recognizes ones effort. Also, compliments can be a factor to remove competition at workplace. When we build a competition-free workplace, we are building a place of shared ideas, shared wins, and shared progress.

    “PROFESSIONALLY” NOT “PERSONALLY”

Again, you don’t have to be chums with your officemates. You are in the office to work and not to make friends. It’s always wise to build connections. However, to keep things professional you also have to make your social relationship with your officemates at a professional level.

    LISTEN MORE

Don’t listen in order to get the chance to talk. Listen to learn and so that you can understand your workmate’s point of view. Listen to gain wisdom. When someone opens up, sometimes, they don’t need an advice. They just need someone to talk to without getting judged.
