Hey sweetie! Tell your mom or your household cook to refrain cooking processed meat as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) orders temporary ban on the importation, distribution and sale of processed meat products—including your favorite luncheon meat during breakfast.
Since your popular luncheon meat is from China, it is covered by the initial temporary ban including those products from Hungary, Latvia, Poland, Romania, Russia and Ukraine which are believed to be affected of the African Swine Fever Virus. Now, it covers 16 countries adding Belgium, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Czech Republic, Moldova, Mongolia, South Africa, Vietnam, and Zambia in the list.
The temporary ban seeks to ensure that the virus would not affect the country, most especially the large industry of hog raisers.
The FDA stressed that this animal disease is highly contagious and hemorrhagic disease of pigs, warthogs, including European wild boar and American wild pigs. This virus causes fever, loss of appetite, hemorrhages in the skin and internal organs and will conclude to death of affected animals.
However, the disease is not considered a human health threat but causes major loss on the swine industry in the country.
For now, just to be safe, refrain from eating processed meat products.
It’s better safe than sorry!
