Coffee Break – Episode 57: Children as breadwinners of the family

May 27, 2021

  • Ever wondered if child artists really do like what they are doing? Or are they just being forced to work by their parents? Child labor deprives children of enjoying their childhood, their growth, and of course harmful to their physical and mental wellness. According to a 2011 survey by the Philippine Statistics Authority, there are 2.1 million child laborers aged 5 to 17 years old and about 95 percent of them are doing hazardous work. With this, should children be working in behalf of his/her family?

In this episode of Coffee Break, DJs Nick and Shai talked about children as breadwinners of the family. Nick and Shai have been blunt on talking about this topic. For Shai, a child is supposed to grow as a regular kid. “MAHIYA NAMAN KAYO,” Nick urged the parents not to make their child as their retirement plan. The two agreed that this issue boils down to family planning and the lack of system. Shai believed that if you can’t afford to raise a child, then don’t. To end the conversation, Shai said that being a breadwinner is not a goal to achieve and it’s not something parents encourage their kids to do. For Nick, to all the breadwinners out there, may it be a child or not, teach your parents, siblings, etc. to land on their own feet so you can fully enjoy your life.
