Coffee Break – Episode 61: Pinoys rising through adversity

July 3, 2021

  • What is the first thing that comes in your mind when you hear the word ‘resilient?’ You can’t be Pinoy without being resilient. “Bagyo ka lang, pinoy kami,” “Virus ka lang, pinoy kami,” and so on and so forth. But do you think that this kind of mindset is healthy? Are we doing the things that the system should be doing for us? Is resiliency an excuse not to do their job?

In this episode of Coffee Break, DJs Nick and Shai talked about the most overused narrative, Filipinos rising through adversity or our resiliency. Shai said that there’s nothing wrong on Filipinos being resilient but what makes it look bad is there are leaders (a.k.a. government officials) who take advantage of these stories. “When some leaders jump in and give appreciation to those who showed their resiliency, it is actually a way of masking their responsibility that they should be in the first place,” Nick said. The people to blame or get mad at is the system because these guys use other’s stories for their (political) gain. In the end, Shai said that stories of resilience serve as an inspiration, happy ending, or a feel good story for people to appreciate. While for Nick, there’s no other country that is more resilient than us because we Filipinos are more mentally strong that we are able to overcome any adversity that we face.

Manila Broadcasting Company launched their first-ever MBC Short Film Festival which celebrates Filipinos rising through adversity. Out of 170 plus entries submitted, only 15 will be announced as finalists. “It is important to share these stories to let others know that they’ve been through and something must be done about it,” Shai said.
