Since the advert of social media, hate speech and fake news have started to increase. One negativity spread to another. From lambasting a person, destabilizing the government, and many more. Is there something that we can do to lessen the spread of this kind of information?
In this episode of Coffee Break Plugged In, DJ Shai and Aliwan Fiesta Digital Queen first-runner up Jasmine Omay talked about hate news/speech. For Jasmine, a hate news is a hate news when it becomes very intentional, attacking and spreads negativity. The Tarlaqueña beauty admitted that she was also a victim of hate news because it is very common in pageantry. Some of the negative things she heard was “Sana hindi siya manalo,” “Buti na lang iba ‘yung nanalo.” and a few more. For Jasmine these things did not affect her because it’s not her personality to confront. For DJ Shai, why there has been hate is because people are frustrated or unhappy with what is happening around. To end the conversation, Jasmine shared on how can we fight hate news/speech: “To learn who you are as person. Once you know your capacity, your strengths, you will not be affected by what others are saying.” Meanwhile, DJ Shai hopes that everyone can be better online and become more peaceful to each other. Instead of spreading hate, try to educate.
