Heads up coffeeholics! Your favorite coffee could be a reason why you always have an upset stomach.
There is a little research about coffee having an immediate effect on our bowel movement. Yet, few research shows that it could stimulate colonic motor activity within minutes of drinking it.
A research conducted in 1988 when twelve people agreed to have a sensor probe into their colons. They found out that caffeinated drink was 60% more effective in stimulating the colonic motor than drinking water.
Furthermore, it could also stimulate the hormone gastrin. This hormone triggers the production of gastric acid which enables our body to digest foods faster. Hence, drinking coffee helps our digestive system but could speed up the time that food leaves the stomach going to the small intestine.
But, drinking coffee is NOT the solution for constipation
Despite this, experts do not encourage people to use coffee as a remedy if you have a problem with your bowel movement or constipation.
According to Jerlyn Jones, a registered dietitian nutritionist and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, we should take a regular amount of fiber like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts and seeds for a healthy stomach.
