grentperez talks stage name, love for Bossa Nova, and more

June 26, 2023

  • The name grentperez came about due to a typo on Instagram, where he mistakenly wrote “grentperez” instead of his real name, Grant. Unaware of Instagram’s name change policy, he grew accustomed to the unique spelling and decided to stick with it. He found the combination of three Es and no space appealing.

Bossa nova became grentperez’s chosen genre due to its smooth and romantic sound, influenced by Filipino music like the traditional serenade known as “harana,” which he enjoyed during childhood. Growing up, he was fond of gentle and melodic music from artists such as The Eagles, The Beatles, and Queen, which have always captivated him. In the contemporary music scene, he draws inspiration from artists like Rex Orange County and Daniel Caesar. Upon receiving his first nylon string acoustic guitar, he self-taught himself Jeremy Passion’s “Lemonade,” learning chords, shapes, and plucking patterns.

grentperez born in Australia, embarked on his musical journey as a Filipino artist, initially gaining recognition through his YouTube channel in 2013. With over half a million subscribers, he is widely recognized for his million-streamed bossa nova hits such as “Cherry Wine,” “(Only) About Love,” and “Absence of Few,” along with his noteworthy covers, among others.
