Michael Learns to Rock, the Danish band Filipinos love

  We Filipinos often express our admiration to musical artists through purchasing copies of their albums, buying expensive tickets and attending to their live concerts, and most of the time, we used to sing our favorite songs in our videoke machines.

  Among all the artists and groups, there is one international group that Filipinos might have been in love with—Michael Learns to Rock.

  Established in 1988, MLTR have grown in the international scene because of their romantic ballad songs. The group was composed of singer Jascha Richter, drummer Kane Wanscher, guitarist Mikkel Lentz, and bassist Soren Madsen.

  Do you wonder, why Filipinos are so connected with their songs?

  It all started in the 1990s where MLTR has released their numerous hit singles. Filipino fans love to sing along with the group’s songs such as “Sleeping Child,” “25 Minutes,” “Out of the Blue” which were released in 1993. Some of the tracks which became popular in the country were “Paint My Love,” released in 1996, and “Nothing to Lose,” released in 1997.

  In the later 2000s, the boy group was made popular by their “Sweetest Surprise” which made number one spot in Thailand and the track “It’s Gonna Make Sense” that was used as farewell song in the reality TV show ‘Pinoy Big Brother’ here in the Philippines.

  Given the fact that Filipinos loved MLTR so much, it seemed that the group became associated with their Pinoy fans as well.

  MLTR expressed this admiration by visiting the country several times in the 1990s and four times in the past years. The Danish band has recently visited the Philippines for a concert, namely in September 2015, August 2017, October 2018, and November 2019.

  They also expressed that Filipino fans are special and the best people to sing with.

  “Filipino fans are special to us. First, they have been with us from Day 1 as a very supportive audience … an audience of great singers! They have given us some of the best live experiences ever in our career,” drummer Kåre Wanscher said in 2018.

  “It’s really wonderful. We have a history with Filipino fans. They invited us here in the ’90s and they still do,” guitarist Mikkel Lentz said in 2015, celebrating their 25^th anniversary through concert.

  “We can also see on Facebook that we have a lot of fans from the Philippines. Maybe the Philippines is the country where we have the most Facebook fans. It’s amazing to have that many fans. They are the reason why we’re here,” Lentz added.
