On Moira Dela Torre’s Season of Independence

  If we were to ask Millennials and Gen Zs which singer holds the power of piercing through their hearts and embracing their being, we bet the Filipino singer-songwriter Moira Dela Torre will be on top of the list.
  
  Don’t let her angelic face fool you! With her catchy melodies and earnest lyrics paired with her honesty and genuine emotion in singing, she can either put a smile on your face or make you cry your heart out. There’s no in-between.

  Raised in a family of musicians, Dela Torre quickly learned the intricacies of songwriting and arrangement. As a matter of fact, she had written her first song, “After Your Heart,” at the young age of 12. 

  Prior to joining the first season of The Voice Philippines, Dela Torre lent her voice to corporate jingles and theme songs. Some of which were for a detergent brand, an infant’s shampoo, and a fast-food chain.
  
  Armed with a passion for music and a background in songwriting, a big break is waiting just around the corner. Following her appearance in the show, she released her first single, “Love Me Instead,” through her debut self-titled EP album.
  
  But it was her single, “Malaya,” and cover of “Torete,” that catapulted her into mainstream popularity. These were official soundtracks of the romantic films Camp Sawi and Love You To The Stars And Back.

  From then, there’s no stopping her from making a mark on the masses’ music consciousness. In 2017, her interpretation of the song “Titibo-tibo” won Himig Handog 2017 — the biggest Filipino songwriting competition organized by ABS-CBN and Star Records. 

  2018 proved to be an even bigger year for her as she successfully staged a two-night show before a jam-packed crowd in her first major solo concert, became Spotify’s No. 1 Most Streamed Artist in the Philippines, and her Malaya album going certified 8x Platinum with more than 120, 000 copies sold.

  It was also during this year when she got engaged to her best friend Jason Marvin Hernandez which was featured in the official music video of Tagpuan.
  
  The musically-inclined couple walked down the aisle the following year. Dela Torre even made a wedding song featuring Hernandez called, “Ikaw at Ako.”
  
  She also became a judge on Idol Philippines, and in September of that year, she held her second major concert, titled Braver, at the Araneta Coliseum.

  Her second studio album, “Patawad,” was released in March 2021, which included the hit singles “Mabagal” featuring Daniel Padilla, “Patawad, Paalam,” and “Paalam” featuring Ben&Ben. With over 15,000 copies sold, the album was certified Platinum in the Philippines.
  
  It was in April this year when rumors began circulating that her marriage with Hernandez was on the rocks. A few weeks later, both confirmed their separation in a statement.
  
  But now, after months of silence, healing, and redirection, Moira Dela Torre is back with a new rhythm as she signed with Republic Records, a division of Universal Music Group, Inc., to expand her wings in music globally.

  Dela Torre described this new chapter as a “season of independence,” carrying her music along in the process. “I expected this season to be heavy, but God has a way of turning things around. And I’m just thankful that of all the things that were taken away from my life, my listeners were not one of them and they have really shown me how strong their support and love is and I’ll always be thankful for that.” she said in an interview.
  
  A day before her welcome party, she dropped her newest single, “Aking Habangbuhay,” for the movie, An Inconvenient Love. Dela Torre says the love song is about “hope and calm, and finding that person who gives you peace.”
