As children, we grew up with chewing gums often associated with tooth problems. As an adult, chewing gums are our go-to candy when we want something to wash away unpleasant odor from what we ate. But did you know that aside from that, chewing gums also have a lot of benefits? Well, let us educate you! *wink* But kidding aside, here are four health benefits you can get from moderately chewing a piece of gum!

It reduces acid reflux and heartburn symptoms

Heartburn is an uncomfortable feeling that people may experience when stomach acids travel up the throat. While chewing gums cannot cure acid reflux attacks, chewing can lessen the discomfort of enduring a burning feeling in your chest. It stimulates saliva flow which helps reduce acids in the esophagus and improves acid reflux symptoms. Chew a piece of gum after a meal for a fresher breath and fewer heartburn symptoms!

It lessens cavities in your teeth

Since we mentioned that chewing a piece of gum increases saliva production, it does not only do good in acid reflux. It washes away food debris and bacteria after meals which helps lessen tooth cavities. As long as it’s sugarless, chewing a piece of gum after meals for 20 minutes will give you a lot of benefits. Of course, there is no greater care than brushing your teeth and visiting your dentist regularly. However, this one is of great help in times of emergency! *wink*

    It prevents ear infections

If you are fond of traveling, you might have heard the hack of chewing a piece of gum. It is often used to equalize the ear pressure during a rapid change in altitude during a flight. But did you know that aside from that, chewing gums also help in preventing ear infections, especially in children? According to studies, chewing gums contain xylitol, a natural sugar alcohol used as a sugar substitute on sugarless chewing gums. While a regular chewing gum’s natural effect includes disposal of earwax, sugarless chewing gums help counter bacteria that can cause ear infections and discomfort.

    It lowers stress and anxiety

Do you notice how you do unusual things like biting your nails when you feel like your heart’s about to explode? Well, chewing a piece of gum does the same thing to you. Moreover, it is a better way of releasing nervous energy than biting your nails in front of other people, right? Studies show that chewing a stick of gum helps you to stay focused, thus, lowering your stress and anxiety level. So, the next time you encounter that feeling, you can just grab a pack of chewing gum and have some!

So, are chewing gums good for your health? Yes, only if you do not take too much of what you need. Of course, you must also remember that even though these things are beneficial to your health, they may also cause a problem when not taken moderately. If you think your habit of chewing a piece of gum causes you more problems than comfort, better pay a visit to your dentist or doctor.
