  • In a significant move to promote public health and reduce the risk of non-communicable diseases, the Department of Health (DOH) in the Philippines has issued a strong reminder to food companies to eliminate trans fat from their products by June 2023. This bold initiative demonstrates the commitment of the government to protect the well-being of its citizens and prioritize the adverse health effects associated with its consumption. By eliminating this harmful substance, the Philippines aims to create a healthier future for its population.

    What’s bad about Trans Fat?

This type of unsaturated fat that holds at least one trans double bond in its molecular structure. Its unique arrangement affects the physical properties of the fat, making it a real solid at room temperature. It is commonly found in processed foods, such as baked goods, fried foods, and snack items which we all love to eat. Unfortunately, food manufacturers use trans fat to extend our food’s shelf life, stability at high temperatures, and the desired texture they provide to products. They are also present in some fast-food items. Yes! Burgers, French fries, doughnuts have extremely high content of trans fat.

    The Philippines’ Commitment to Health

This bold initiative of eliminating trans fat from the food supply will require collaboration between the government, food industry stakeholders, and the public, but the benefits are undeniable. The country will have a healthier population, reduced burden on the healthcare system, and will be a great example for other countries to emulate.

Also, the elimination of trans fat in the Philippines will have a huge significant when it comes to the health benefits of the Filipinos. By reducing the intake of trans fat, the risk of cardiovascular diseases, obesity, and related health complications will decrease, which will eventually lead to improved overall health outcomes.

This directive is part of the government’s commitment to safeguard public health and promote healthier dietary choices. With health issues on the rise, the elimination of eating foods with trans fat serves as a crucial step towards creating a healthier future for the Filipinos.

    Choosing Healthier Alternatives

To reduce trans fat consumption, individuals are advised to adopt a healthier eating pattern. This includes consuming a balanced diet rich in whole grains, vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, and healthy fats, which are found in nuts, seeds, avocados, and fish. It is also essential to read food labels carefully and choose products with minimal or zero trans fat content. It may be hard at first, but it will be all worth it in the end.

Together, let’s create a future where trans fat plays a minimal role in our diets, leading to better health outcomes for individuals and communities. Choose to live healthy!
