Do you have a Sweet or Salty tooth?

  • Cakes over fries, or chips over cookies? Yes, I’m guilty. I’ll choose both cakes and cookies. I have a thing when it comes to sweets. It makes me smile without any reason. There’s this joy that I can’t explain! I don’t know! I just can’t imagine my life without any desserts right after my sumptuous meal. Yeah, I know, I have a sweet tooth!

On the other hand, there are some people who are constantly craving chips and fries over cookies and chocolate, then you may have a “salt tooth.”

Let’s talk about the “sweet tooth” first. What is it?

A sweet tooth is a regular or consistent craving for sweets, like cakes, candy, chocolate, cookies, and ice cream.

If you think you’ll reach for a handful of gummy bears than some chips for your snack, you have a sweet tooth. If you feel like any meal without dessert is just not complete, well, raise your hands darling, you really do have a sweet tooth just like I do!  Just look at these delicious cookies! I’m drooling!!!

Although, you still must be careful when eating your sweets. You may not be surprised to find out that having a sweet tooth can be dangerous to your teeth. Just be careful and take proper care of your teeth. Let’s avoid cavities! Having a sweet tooth is not bad.  Constantly giving in to your sweet tooth is bad.

    How about the “salt tooth?”

Just like a person with a sweet tooth is drawn to sugar, people with a salt tooth are drawn to sodium and they end up eating way more salt than what’s recommended. Hmm, is it good or bad?

There was a study presented by the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions meeting in New Orleans wherein they found that individuals who have a variation of the TAS2R48 gene are almost twice as likely to overconsume sodium than individuals without this genetic variation. Hmm, that makes sense.

So, basically, instead of a “sweet tooth,” they have a “salt tooth.”

I know you wouldn’t/t want to miss re-creating these Bacon Cheese Fries! Look!

A 2010 study found that people are known as “supertasters.” The supertasters can experience flavors like bitterness, saltiness, and sweetness more intensely than people without these specific taste receptor genes.

We have our own taste buds (which we have 10,000 of, by the way) and they respond to four different types of flavors—sweet, salty, sour, and bitter.

So, what’s behind that unappeasable sweet or salty tooth? Well, a lot of it is genetic. Our DNA determines how sensitive we are to certain flavors.

Everyone contains a specific combination of genes that determines how our taste buds will react to flavors. People who have a sweet tooth contain certain DNA in taste receptors which are found in the intestines and on the tongue while people who have more taste buds may prefer salty foods.

To be honest, there are plenty of explanations to explain why you are and what you are. Now go grab your favorite snack and if you haven’t already, whether it’s sweet or salty. Your choice!
