The Crazy Rich Asian’s director Jon M. Chu shared to the Rolling Stone the note he sent Coldplay requesting the licensing rights for their 2000 hit “Yellow.”
Coldplay initially rejected the director but Chu did not give up and instead he wrote a personal letter to the members Chris Martin, Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland, and Will Champion explaining why he needed the song “ Yellow” in Crazy Rich Asians.
Chu wanted to own the term “yellow” since it has been a derogatory term to describe Asians and that song will help them own the term. “We’re going to own that term,” he told The Holiwood Report. “If we’re going to be called yellow, we’re going to make it beautiful.”
He then got the approval from Coldplay and used he Mandarin cover track by University of Southern California freshman and The Voice Season 10 contestant Katherine Ho.
The film’s three-day debut in North America earned $25.2 million and a five-day opening raking in $34 million to top the weekend’s box office.
