“Nanay, Tatay” wins recent PhilPop songwriting competition

  “Nanay, Tatay” which was composed by Chud Festejo is the winning entry on the recent Philippine Popular Music Festival songwriting competition 2018.

  Chud Festejo from Davao shocked the whole country with the first few words of his composition where it sounds like an upbeat novelty tune that speaks about the innocence of the youth. But the novelty was replaced by a chant that masks the subject that the song tackles.

  Interviewed by the Inquirer, Festejo stated, “As I was writing the verses, I wondered about the reasons children beg on the streets. Is it because of easy money? Why are they not in school? From that point, the story just flowed… It took maybe two weeks to finish the song, with news and online posts providing additional inspirations.”

  “At times, kids would sing while playing by themselves. They sing about the things they hear or see … social situations. At first, it sounds cute or playful, but then it starts to get a bit disturbing once the words sink in. You wonder how, why they came up with that,” he added.

  The 2018 PhiliPop Music Festival is a year-long celebration of original Filipino music compositions highlighted by a series of events that put the spotlight on new Filipino songs churned by Filipinos across the country and the world.
