Both musicians and artists express dismay over the policy of Philippine Airlines (PAL) with regards to musical instruments that are not allowed as carry-on baggage.
The issue was brought up after a certain artist named Allen Meek from Singapore. Meek complained and suggested fellow musicians not to travel with PAL for its zero tolerance for musical instruments.
It was September 22 when the known orchestral conductor Gerard Salonga questioned the policy. “Is there a good reason (beyond ‘that’s our policy’) why you don’t allow musical instruments as carry-on baggage, except ukuleles – even if they clearly fit?”
Jonathan Urbano explained that violins are small enough to fit overhead cabins. While violinist Noel Martin remained unconvinced that an instrument will become safe once the musician purchased another seat for it. Ice Seguerra also expressed frustrations stating his experience when her case got cracked in travel.
On the other hand, PAL answered Salonga’s query through Facebook saying “We wish to inform you the such instruments are not allowed as carry-on due to the limited overhead space. Moreover, passenger safety is our utmost priority which is why instruments are not allowed onboard unless passengers avail our cabin baggage services.”
