The Grammy Awards organization has just announced the renaming of the “Best World Music Album” category in order to avoid “connotations of colonialism,” November 5, Thursday.
The said category was renamed as “Best Global Music Album.” The decision was made after the Recording Academy had talks with several artists, linguists and ethnomusicologists that aims to adopt a “more relevant, modern and inclusive term.”
After its launch in 1992, the prize has been awarded to five times to Brazilian artists, three times to artists from India, four times to United States artists and those from South Africa, Benin, Mali, and France.
The category aims to celebrate excellence in music albums from around the world. The name change will take effect on the 63rd edition of the Grammy Awards on January 31, 2021.
