“The wheels on the bus go round and round, round and round, round and round. The wheels on the bus go round and round, all through the town.”
If you have a kid in your household then, you might have probably heard of this nursery rhyme. With all the emerging TV shows for children, this song might have probably given you the last song syndrome, even just for once!
Some parents are always preoccupied with work or household chores. But these shows might have just been the answer to their daily struggles. Parents only need to have their toddlers sit in front of their tablet or computers and, voila! They can already buy time by letting their children watch while they take a break from their tasks.
But have you ever wondered why these toddlers are extremely into these kinds of shows?
Let’s take CoComelon as an example. CoComelon is a one-hour show intended for toddlers, starred by a baby boy named JJ. The show features nursery rhymes that capture the attention of the toddlers. CoComelon is the modern-day Teletubbies, Dora the Explorer, Barney and Friends, and many other shows for kids that you have watched a few years back. This show captures the attention of the toddlers mostly because of its bright and colorful features.
Despite the comfort that it gives the working moms, the show became a topic of debate after a child development specialist posted a story stating the disadvantages of having your children exposed to the said show. Read more.
As a parent, should you still allow your child to watch these kinds of shows or any other cartoons made for children? Well, allowing them to do so is not bad, after all. All you need to remember is to balance it out: know when to let the show babysit your child and know when to take over.
It is understandable if some parents nowadays rely on such kinds of shows for kids. These kinds of shows are really of big help to their everyday situation. So, here are some tips on how you can maximize these shows without having a fear of letting your children be into the show that much.
Limit the time.
Ensure that your children will only spend a specific amount of time in front of tablets or computers. According to KidsHealth, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends a limited amount of time for toddlers to be in front of the screen so that their interaction with people in the future will not be compromised.
Do more than what the show does.
If your child spends time watching cartoons, then make sure that you will also give the same or more amount of time to them. Remember, watching TV shows are good because these shows provide lessons for the children. But always keep in mind that the first and best mentor for your children is you. Their future is a product of how they were raised and taught when they were younger.
Be the main star.
Though the characters of these shows are undeniably cute, the main star should be no other than you. Be a good role model to your toddler and show them what you want to see in them in the future.
These shows indeed are of great help to moms. But then, as most people say, too much of something is not a good thing. All things must come in moderation. These shows really help a lot in terms of work productivity. But remember that you must also be there with them. Watching it with them isn’t a bad idea, after all. Who knows? Maybe one day, you’ll find yourself constantly singing “The wheel on the bus go round and round” as well.
