The Grammy-nominated singer and actress Deborah Cox has recalled her horrible experience during the 9/11 attacks in 2001, September 6, Monday.
During that day, the singer just came off of a high spirit after being a featured performer during Michael Jackson’s star-studded two nights 30th anniversary show at Madison Square Garden.
“Our hotel was not far from the twin towers. My husband and I woke up and [were] on the phone with room service to order breakfast, turned on the TV and saw the second plane about to hit the building. It was surreal. We thought it was a movie. We went from the highest of highs to complete despair,” Cox said in an interview with New York Daily News.
Cox also narrated that they were nowhere to go and thought if the country is at war. They took the train going back to their new home in Florida after airports were shut down and no rental cars became available that time. “It was scary. I thought to myself, ‘Oh my God, are we at war?’ I was so grateful when the train finally pulled up to Deerfield Beach,” she said.
The Toronto-native singer considered 9/11 as an impactful day in her life. “It changed my perspective, making me realize that you have to always stay in gratitude. It made me realize that tomorrow is not promised,” Cox reflected.
The whole world was astounded by terrorist attacks through series of airline hijacking in the morning of September 11, 2001. About 2,750 people died at the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, 184 at the Pentagon, and 40 in Pennsylvania. All 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda who were responsible for the attacks also died.
