Pop icon and hitmaker Justin Bieber has sold his music publishing and catalog shares to Blackstone-Backed Hipgnosis management for $200 million.
The music company itself confirmed this after several weeks of rumors that the 28-year-old is about to sell his music rights.Bieber is among music artists like Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Justin Timberlake, and Shakira who have cashed in on their own music.
Two of the Canadian singer’s biggest hits since he became famous are ‘Baby’ and ‘Sorry.’ He is also among the best-selling artists of all time with 150 million records sold and songs streamed on Spotify for more than 32 billion times.
The buyer of Bieber’s music catalog, Hipgnosis Songs Capital, is a $1 billion venture between financial giant Blackstone and the British Hipgnosis Song Management. Hipgnosis acquired the publishing copyrights of Bieber’s 290-song back catalog, including the writer’s share. This also includes the artist rights to the royalties it will receive from the songs that will be used in public.“The impact of Justin Bieber on global culture over the last 14 years has truly been remarkable,” said Hipgnosis chief Merck Mercuriadis, a longtime music industry executive, in a statement.
“At only 28 years of age, he is one of a handful of defining artists of the streaming era that has revitalized the entire music industry, taking a loyal and worldwide audience with him on a journey from teen phenomenon to culturally important artist.”
It is said that one of the reasons why Bieber decided to sell his music catalog was because of his current condition that prevented him from continuing on his Justice World Tour. Last year, Bieber was diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt Syndrome, a rare complication of shingles that for him caused partial facial paralysis.
