On June 7, the rap icon Tupac Shakur was honored with a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame nearly three decades after the chart-topping artist was gunned down in a drive-by shooting at the age of 25. He is a prominent figure in the East Coast-West Coast hip-hop rivalry, rose to fame in the West Coast scene before his tragic death in Las Vegas.
The ceremony commemorated his life following a short, yet, remarkable journey. Starting as a backup dancer, he transformed himself into a self-proclaimed “gangsta” and emerged as one of the most impactful personalities in hip-hop. Tupac’s sister, Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur, was the one who accepted the award in her late brother’s honor.
In USA Today, Sekyiwa Shakur said, “From the first time he stepped foot on this stage of the Apollo Theater at 13 years old, before anyone recognized his name, he knew he had the dream to have a star here on the Walk of Fame.”
“Today we’re not just honoring a star in the ground, but we’re honoring the work and the passion that he’s put into making his dreams come true. His heavenly star will shine a little brighter today. And once again, he has made us all extremely proud. We love you, Tupac.”
Tupac achieved remarkable success, selling over 75 million records worldwide. This includes chart-topping hits like “California Love” and “Changes.” He is known for his emotionally charged lyrics and captivating stage presence.
Tupac’s star is the 2,758th on the Walk of Fame at 6212 Hollywood Boulevard.
