Following Sia’s two-decade career as a singer-songwriter and the success of her hit singles such as Chandelier, Titanium, and Cheap Thrills, she branched into film-making in 2021 with the release of the musical drama she directed and co-wrote.
The film, which follows a teenager with non-verbal autism and her career, created a backlash for its clumsy portrayal of the condition. Aside from this, she was criticized for casting the neurotypical actress Maddie Ziegler – who has appeared in her several best-known music videos.
Initially, the singer defended the film, claiming that it was “completely” based on the experiences of a “neuroatypical friend.” However, she apologized on Twitter before deleting her account after the film was nominated for two Golden Globe Awards in 2021.
She later clarified that she is not on the autism spectrum but does have ADHD and is recovering from addiction.
“I think one of the greatest things is that nobody can ever know you and love you when you’re filled with secrets and living in shame,” she said.
