The auction has announced that the guitar of the rock icon Kurt Cobain that was used during the legendary 1993 MTV Unplugged performance sold for a record $6 million, June 20, Saturday.
Peter Freedman, founder of RODE microphones, was the buyer of the retro acoustic-electric 1959 Martin D-18E that Cobain played for the Nirvana’s career-defining performance in New York.
“When I heard that this iconic guitar was up for auction, I immediately knew it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to secure it and use it as a vehicle to spotlight the struggles that those in the performing arts are facing and have always faced,” said the Australian mentioned by the Julien’s Auctions.
The starting estimate was at $1 million or over PhP 50 million, but at $6.01 million or over P300 million, this guitar was the most expensive instrument ever sold at auction.
