Music scholar discovers film inspired John Lennon’s “Grow Old With Me”

• A music scholar has discovered a baseball film which John Lennon sparked inspiration of his song entitled “Grow Old With Me,” October 4, Sunday.

  An author named Kenneth Womack is set to release his upcoming book titled “John Lennon 1980: The Last Days in the Life.” In there, he wrote about 1978 made-for-TV movie A Love Affair: The Eleanor and Lou Gehrig Story- the baseball movie Lennon watched.

  It was also known that Lennon once admitted that he wrote the song out of a baseball movie on television yet remained unknown for 40 years.

  “I wanted to know what film had inspired him to compose such a beautiful song. For John, the use of such ‘found objects’ in life and art was essential to his composition practices.” Womack told the Guardian in an interview.

  “Grow Old With Me” was made in November 1980, just a month before Lennon died. It was released in 1984. In 2019, Ringo Starr covered the song with Paul McCartney.
