Instead of celebrating the duo for creating history for the LGBTQIA+ community during the awards evening, they drew flak as conservative (specifically, Christian) viewers condemned their performance for “glorifying Satanism.”

Smith and Petras sported “devilish” costumes in red during the annual telecast of the 2023 Grammy Awards and performed their hit song “Unholy.” The pair performed alongside drag queens Violet Chachki and Gottmik, who wore devil costumes. The performance was filled with flames, horns, and hues of red – the typical, Hollywood adaptation of “hell.”

While the conservatives were shocked (driven by their moral views) after the supposed “satanic” performance, a ‘cult’ closely familiar with the subject matter found it a bit “meh.” David Harris, a magister from the Church of Satan believes that the performance did not particularly conjure up any images of the said demon. More so, he believes that the performance was “all right” and “nothing particularly special.”

The duo won the Grammy for best pop duo/group performance, and Smith offered Petras the spotlight so she could acknowledge being the first transgender person to win the said accolade.

After becoming the first transgender person to win the award for best pop duo/group performance, Petras elaborated on the performance and claimed that people who were outraged about the number were also the ones who served as its primary inspiration. She believes it’s a reflection of not having the freedom to select your religion and not being able to live like others may want you to. She said, “I grew up wondering about religion and wanting to be a part of it, but slowly discovering that it doesn’t want me to be a part of it.” She also says a lot of people have categorized what Sam and her stand for as “religiously not cool.”

As of writing, Both Smith and Petras haven’t responded to the flak drawn from the recent performance.
