During an appearance on the Today show, Taylor Lautner, who had a brief relationship with Taylor Swift back in 2009, spoke about the pop superstar’s upcoming release of her third re-recorded album on July 7. Lautner, accompanied by his wife, Taylor Dome, was promoting their podcast, ‘The Squeeze,’ when he was asked about the album, particularly the track ‘Back to December,’ which is rumored to be about their past relationship.

Lautner expressed his positive opinion of the album, stating, “I think it’s a great album. Yeah, I feel safe,” and added, “Praying for John.” This comment presumably referred to John Mayer, who is said to have inspired the nearly seven-minute track ‘Dear John’ from Swift’s ‘Speak Now’ album. The song is known for its poignant lyrics, including lines such as, “I see it all now that you’re gone / Don’t you think I was too young to be messed with? / The girl in the dress wrote you a song / You should’ve known, you should’ve known.”

In contrast, ‘Back to December’ takes a sweeter tone as Swift takes responsibility for the end of the relationship and expresses her desire to have another chance. She sings, “But this is me swallowin’ my pride / Standin’ in front of you sayin’ I’m sorry for that night / And I go back to December.”

While Lautner’s concerns for Mayer may be lighthearted, they do hold some merit. When Swift re-recorded her album ‘Red,’ she notably included a new 10-minute version of the breakup anthem ‘All Too Well,’ widely believed to be about her relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal. Fans took to social media to humorously suggest that Gyllenhaal should be wary of what might be included in the re-release.

Swift has not yet disclosed the new tracks that will be featured on Speak Now (Taylor’s Version). However, the album’s product pages on her website indicate that there will be six new additions.
