Tyson Venegas ends ‘American Idol’ journey in Top 10 Spot

Filipino-Canadian singer Tyson Venegas did not win the 21st season of American Idol, finishing his journey in the competition in the Top 10 spot. He fell short of advancing to the competition’s Top 8.
In the latest episode that aired on May 2, the contestants were asked to pick one song out of three options suggested by the judges; Tyson chose to sing “Someone You Loved” by Lewis Capaldi for his performance in front of a live audience. The other two song options given to him were Bruno Mars’ “When I Was Your Man” and Adele’s “Someone Like You.”

Although he is giving up his aspiration of becoming the next American Idol, the 17-year-old performer expressed gratitude for the knowledge and skills he acquired from the competition, under the supervision of judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan.
Pop star and judge Katy Perry commended his performance; “It was exactly what I wanted to see from him.” The “Teenage Dream” singer added, “You have evolved on the stage. You have heart, you have soul, you have passion, you have spirit. You’re the whole package to me now.”

During the auditions, Tyson was awarded the first Platinum ticket of the season for his rendition of Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind.” In addition to this performance, he sang other songs such as “Don’t Stop Me Now” by Queen, Bruno Mars’ “It Will Rain,” “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down on Me” by Elton John, and “For Once In My Life” by Stevie Wonder. He also presented one of his original songs, titled “180.”
During his journey, Venegas demonstrated his fondness for popular classic songs by performing tunes like Elton John’s “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” and Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now.” The song he sang during the audition, “New York State of Mind” by Billy Joel, impressed the judges, having been dubbed “The BEST.”
