MOBA life lessons you can adapt in your workplace

  MOBA (or Multiplayer Battle Arena) has been making a name in the gaming world for several years. Mobile Legends, League of Legends (LOL), and Defense of the Ancients (DotA) are examples of the MOBA-themed games people play nowadays. A 5-man team strategically plays these games with one goal: to destroy their opponent’s base. Some might see this as a typical game, but from a different perspective, you will realize that there are many life lessons you can adapt from playing these games, especially in your workplace where you spend most of your time, especially during the pre-pandemic period.

  Here are some of the MOBA life lessons you can adapt in your workplace.

   

  SHOT CALLS AND OPEN COMMUNICATION ARE IMPORTANT.

  MOBA. Shot calls are crucial in every game. Open communication is encouraged when playing MOBA so that the team members will be aware of what’s happening in all areas of the battlefield. The team members need to give updates on what’s happening in their lanes. Shot callers provide instructions on what to do next, based on the inputs of their team members.

  Workplace. Just like in every situation, open communication is of great help in a team. Each and everyone must give inputs and, at the same time, listen and comply with the instructions of the “shot caller” or the team leader. With this, a harmonious relationship will be made among the team members thus, resulting in a successful project.

   

  IT’S NOT ABOUT THE SKIN.

  MOBA. The skins usually are flexed in a game. Often, it becomes a measure of a gamer’s mastery as the skins are purchased using real money. Some players are tagged as “skinners” because they only have the skin, but not the skill. On the contrary, some players do not have skin but undoubtedly have the skills.

  Workplace. Just because your officemate does not always look good doesn’t mean he would not be of great help in a team. He may not look as good as you are, but that does not mean that he can not deliver. Bottom line? Everyone must be respected and treated fairly regardless of how they look.

   

  COMPLEMENT WITH YOUR TEAMMATE’S HERO.

  MOBA. A player must always prioritize his expert hero. But it also pays to play with your team’s strengths and weaknesses. For example, your teammate’s hero has longer life sustainability but has a small damage output. To complement, you might want to choose a hero that may have shorter life sustainability but has a strong damage output. Result? The hero with longer health sustainability may take all the damages, while the hero with a shorter HP may have a free hit to attack the opponents.

  Workplace. Nobody’s perfect. A person may excel in one field, but that does not mean that he will excel in every aspect. To make it work, you must not take his weaknesses against him. Instead, fill in what he lacks off if you can to make a great team that complements each other’s weaknesses.

   

  KNOW YOUR OBJECTIVES, FOCUS ON YOUR VICTORY.

  MOBA. Knowing your goals and objectives is very important in the early part of the game. The team must help the carry hero build his item to prepare for team fights as the game progresses. Sometimes, the team gets out of focus along the way. They fail to obtain their goal; destroy the base of the opponent. Thus, resulting in a defeat.

  Workplace. Distractions are everywhere. But to make your workplace productive, the team should always know what their objectives are. You might encounter delays or problems along the way, but sustaining the objectives is attainable with great teamwork. Remember, your end goal is of the utmost importance.

   

  EVERY ONE HAS AN EQUAL PURPOSE ON YOUR TEAM.

  MOBA. Ideally, a team should have a carry, support, tank (to secure that the carry gets his objectives), and side lane heroes (for tower sustain). Carry- to describe the word itself, has the strongest damage output by the end of the game. But this does not mean that the carry hero is the only reason for victory. Every role in the game is as vital as the carry hero. If one hero fails to serve his purpose in the game, the whole team will suffer.

  Workplace. One may have contributed more, but that does not mean that the team’s success relies only on that person. Everyone has a contribution to the success of a project. Everyone plays a role in the team’s accomplishment regardless of how heavy or light the output is. As the saying goes, there is no “I” in “team.”

   

  DO NOT BE COMPLACENT. DO NOT LOSE HOPE.

  MOBA. If you are on the winning team, do not be complacent. Do not give the opponent a chance to have an epic comeback! Meanwhile, if you are on the losing team, do not easily surrender. Whether you are on the winning or losing team, remember that a lot can happen in a minute, and tables will turn around with just a single good team fight.

  Workplace. Regardless of how you or your team stands in a project, do not falter. Going back to point number 4, focus on your victory. If you think you are already getting there, do not be complacent. Continue until you reach success. Otherwise, never surrender because you’ll never know what will happen next. Who knows, maybe you are already one step closer to victory, and you just don’t know it yet!

   

  JUST BECAUSE YOUR WINS ARE ONE AFTER ANOTHER, IT DOESN’T MEAN ALL YOUR SUCCEEDING GAMES WILL ALSO BE A VICTORY.

  MOBA. Just like every game, sometimes you win, and sometimes you lose. But that does not mean that you won’t play again. You also have to choose your battles. If you got defeated, that does not mean that you will lose in your next game. And vice versa. Win or lose, what’s important is how you enjoy the game. So keep playing until you reach your goal rank.

  Workplace. Some goals are achievable, while others are not. And It’s okay. Just like in games, you can not win all battles. But that does not mean that you will give up. Always keep in mind that a failure is not to make you surrender. They are to teach you a lesson so that the next time you try, you will do better because of what you have learned from your failed attempts.

  A good end-game result strengthens the relationship and gameplay of the players. Likewise, a successful group task in the workplace also fortifies their bond and the team itself. Remember, having a good and harmonious relationship with your teammates never fails to deliver the best results. The inner success does not always rely on how it ended. But on how the team gave the best of what they have to achieve victory. Always keep in mind that the goal is important, but the process is more important.

  Your journey is what makes all of it worthwhile.
