What We Learned From Having Gay And Lesbian Friends

“Tell me who your friends are and I tell you who you are.” This is what the our culture has instilled in our heads about making friends. We are defined by the people who surrounds us and we are labeled by whom we eat lunch and go shopping with. And how they describe us is always connected to the people we spend most of our time with, especially if you are friends with gays and lesbians.
Sometimes what really hurts is when they say, “bakla/tomboy ang mga kaibigan niyan,” with matching tone of judgment. As if being one is such a crime or being friends with one is a wrong thing.
Little do we all know that these people are the best people to be with if we want to see how beautiful life and love is. Open the doors for them in your life and…
1. YOU WILL LEARN THAT THERE’S SO MUCH TO BE THANKFUL FOR
Despite of all the killings that we experience every day, despite all the rants that we hear on the streets about LGBT being unaccepted, despite all the corruption that our bare eyes can see, despite all the frustrations that we feel, there is a pinch of positivity that they bring.
When we continuously rant about our struggles being real, when we express how complicated our love life is, there’s this group of people, unaccepted by their families. And they’ll make you realize that there’s so much to be thankful for.
These friends of yours will make you feel grateful about family. Because it takes them too many things before they can find home and family again. And sometimes they find it on strangers they meet in their journeys.
2. YOU WILL SEE WHAT TRUE LOVE IS
Has someone told you “bakla ka magmahal”?
Do you know that you’re showing them genuine love? Because that’s how gays and lesbians love. They give it all. YOLO when it comes to love. Not because they are asking for anything in return. But that’s the form of love that they know.
They are the genuine example of the statement: love is not proud.
These friends of yours will tell you that you should say “sorry” and say “I love you”. You can freely do that. Because doing so takes them too much things to consider. These friends of yours will make you realize how privileged you are to love without receiving judgment.
3. YOU WILL SEE NO JUDGMENT
Whatever your heart wants to do, whether you are happy or sad, whether you are weak or strong, they hold no judgment. You are not labeled by what you do. You are not labeled by what you say nor what you believe in. You are not defined by how you see the government. You are not your faith just like what they all tell us.
“Tao lang nagkakamali” is enough reason for them.
Who won’t love these people?
Life will always be beautiful with sugar, spice, and everything not-so nice.
