MMDA now assessing to reimplement number coding in Metro Manila

  Maybe you’re one of those drivers and motorists enjoying the non-implementation of Metro Manila’s number coding scheme amid the coronavirus pandemic? Well, continue to enjoy it while a government agency is still assessing the possibility of reviving it soon.

  Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chairman Benhur Abalos has announced that the number coding scheme in Metro Manila is still suspended, as the traffic situation remains “manageable,” July 13, Tuesday.

  The MMDA has suspended the number coding scheme in 2020 “until further notice” due to limited operations of public transportation in Metro Manila.

  Abalos mentioned that the volume of vehicle across the metropolitan is lower during the pandemic at 382,000 compared to pre-pandemic days of 400,000.

  Another factor that the chairman is saying was the implementation of toll collection at the third segment of Skyway which remained free since its opening in December 2020 up to July 11, 2021. “Kung dadagdag itong 20,000, you could just imagine. Kaya pinagaaralan namin ito kung ibabalik namin ang number coding,” Abalos said in an interview.

  With this imminent traffic problem, additional 20,000 motorists shall look for alternate routes which will bring them back to EDSA that brings approximately 399,000 cars per day, just a thousand away from its pre-pandemic situation.
