Have you ever missed riding your bike around the University of the Philippines Diliman Academic Oval on a weekend? Well, not for long!
According to a memorandum by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Community Affairs on February 1, the university now allows non-motorized vehicles such as bicycles, scooters, and other personal mobility carriers.
UP Diliman is home to a beautiful 2.2-kilometer elliptical road that is a great spot for walking, jogging, and biking. This was closed down last year after a surge of cases linked to the Omicron variant of COVID-19.
Planning to pedal around UP Academic Oval with your friends? Here’s what you should keep in mind:
Those without UP-ID or gate passes can enter only through the University Avenue, Magsaysay, Jacinto, and Velasquez portals, and the Aguinaldo gate. Guards will inspect your IDs before allowing entry.
Moreover, all portals and gates are open daily from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. except for University Avenue and Aguinaldo, which are open 24 hours daily.
Cyclists must also observe the maximum speed of 15 kilometers per hour (kph) around the Academic Oval. On other roads within the campus, 30 kph is the maximum speed limit, but take note that bikers will share the road with cars and other motorized vehicles outside the Academic Oval.
Bikers are to also share the road with pedestrians and other non-motorized vehicles, so ride with caution.
