The San Miguel Corporation (SMC) has walked through the soft opening of the much-awaited Skyway stage 3, December 29, Tuesday.

“We are glad to finally welcome motorists, even on a limited capacity, starting December 29. While this is only a partial opening, given the scale and importance of this project, this is a very significant development. We believe it will be key to our economic recovery after the pandemic,” said Ramon S. Ang, president and chief operating officer.

On its partial opening, motorists can use up to four lanes of the Skyway stage 3 and no toll fees will be collected for a month. By January 14, the SMC will formally open all the seven lanes of the entire stretch from Buendia, Makati to the North Luzon Expressway (NLEx), which is 18 kilometers.

“Together with Skyway 1, 2, and Skyway extension which have a total of 20 kilometers, Skyway 3 extends the entire Skyway system to 38 kilometers. With the completion next year of the Skyway Extension project at the southern end–from Susanna Heights to Alabang–the entire Skyway will have 36 access points on both sides, from end-to-end,” SMC explained on its website.

The Skyway 3 is going to be a game changer. It will cut travel time from the North Luzon Expressway (NLEx) to the South Luzon Expressway (SLEx) from three hours to just 20-25 minutes. With Skyway’s opening, Luzon will now have an expressway from Rosario, La Union to Batangas City.

“With Skyway 3, we will improve the daily commutes and lives of so many Filipinos. We will lessen their time spent in traffic on the road, we can increase both their productivity and time spent with their families,” Ang previously said in a statement.

“Apart from this, the transportation of goods from north and south Luzon will also be so much easier, faster, and more efficient. This will be a big boost to our economy and support growth throughout the regions,” he added.

Most of all, it will be an alternative route to EDSA for those travelling between Metro Manila and neighboring provinces.

    What’s your take on this?

This would be a great Christmas and new year gift to motorists amid the pandemic.
