With the recent gold medal win of Hidilyn Diaz, Filipinos all over the nation poured their support to her victory. Pledges and praises were given to the gold medalist. With this, do you think that Filipinos are really supportive when it comes to sports? Or people are just riding the bandwagon train?
In this episode of Coffee Break, DJs Chloe and Nick talk about the country’s support to local athletes raising our flag in international competitions. For them, they admitted that Filipinos are more supportive in pageants that happen yearly than the Olympics that happen every 4 years. “We are well-represented in the Olympics but it’s sad that they are not supported,” Chloe said. “These athletes devoted their lives training for the Olympics,” she added. For Nick, he sees that people are not giving where credit is due. “The Olympics have shown that Filipino society supports only those who’ve already succeeded,” he quoted. With many brands pledging awards, cash prize, etc. to the Filipino Olympian medalists, how about those that did not succeed but still represented the country in an international stage? In the end, Chloe and Nick shared their sentiment on how we can support our athletes. They said that we should be paying our taxes and the government should allocate a percentage of it for them because at the end of the day, it’s not enough that you support yourself especially if you are representing our country internationally.
